Useful information for planning your trip
When is the best time to visit Iceland?
The best time to visit Iceland depends on what you want to see. For the Northern Lights, visit between September and April. For warmer weather and hiking, the summer months, particularly July and August, are ideal. Spring (May to June) and fall (September to October) offer fewer crowds and mild weather, suitable for road trips and outdoor activities.
Which Icelandic airports have direct flights from the US?
Direct flights from the US to Iceland primarily land at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), located near Reykjavik. Major US cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles offer direct flights, with airlines including Icelandair and Delta operating regular routes.
Do I need a visa to visit Iceland?
US citizens do not need a visa for short visits to Iceland, up to 90 days. However, a valid passport is required and starting sometime in 2025, an ETIAS authorization will be necessary for Americans visiting the Schengen Area, including Iceland. We're happy to help with this. More info here.
How many days should I spend on vacation in Iceland?
The ideal vacation length in Iceland is between 7 to 10 days. This allows enough time to explore the Golden Circle, the South Coast, and Reykjavik. We recommend at least 10 days for the Ring Road. Longer stays of up to two weeks provide a deeper exploration, including the Westfjords and the Highlands.
